These shatterproof UV tubes are used in factories and workshops and in particular food processing industry where there can be no possibility of glass fragments getting into the products.
Basically they are a normal ultraviolet tube with a shrink wrapped outer skin which will not tear or split. If the tube is broken the glass is contained within the coating and so there is no danger of contamination below the light fitting.
Germicidal lamps need a special coating to allow the right light frequency to get through the coating, if it isn’t correct then the tube wont do any good at all!
